Let’s Talk Turkeys – by Sindy Harris

The topic of the hour this month has been the wild turkeys in Jacksonville.  A number of residents have complained bitterly about the turkeys on social media; specifically, that Jacksonville has too many of them; residents feed the turkeys, and they are becoming nuisances and more aggressive.  Of course, there are many people, like myself, […]

Affection for Our Jacksonville PD – by Diana Crabtree Green, CPA

Jacksonville Review – September 2023

When talking with others about living here, I usually sum up Jacksonville as “a quaint little bubble.” This reflects endearment for our city’s historic charm and moreover that I feel safe living here. Jacksonville appears largely protected from many of the issues challenging areas nearby. Crimes in our town tend to […]

Summer greetings to all our residents and visitors! When I first stood before the City Council in February of this year, I had no idea that my serious concerns about speeding in town were so widespread and significant. Don’t Pick on Pickleball – by Dave Doi

Jacksonville Review – June 2023 issue

The Mayor and City Council are again facing the pickleball controversy in our town. In March, they voted to prohibit pickleball on Sunday and to limit the hours of play on the other days. This compromise did not placate the small group of neighbors; it only strengthened their resolve to […]

Smith Attack Lacks Facts

The underlying theme of the recall effort being led by Hubert Smith is that Jacksonville has residents ready, willing and to able support a volunteer fire department. On the contrary, those Smith snidely claims will put down their lattes and glasses of pinot noir and pick up a fire ladder are too busy with family, career and other volunteer work to do so.

Letter from Mr. Dick Ames regarding funding for the Jacksonville Fire department

I am deeply concerned about the movement that is under way to reshape our Fire Department from the current structure of six professional fire service members, augmented with interns and volunteers, to a volunteer fire department. While I respect and support the work and dedication of volunteers and what they accomplish, I strongly believe that an all-Volunteer Fire Department will place our citizens and neighbors at risk.

Letter from Mr. Hubert Smith regarding funding for the Jacksonville Fire Department

A National Fire Protection Assn report tabulates the median number of paid firefighters for populations of 25,000 to 49,999 at 1.27 persons. The result of a nationwide survey, this gives an idea of the most common staffing levels however it does not reflect a recommendation by the NFPA. Jacksonville now has 6 full-time equivalent firefighters and the department has projected an 11-person department by FY 2013-2014. This would take the present $541,000 fire budget to $1,400,000 by FY 2012-2013.
