To the editor-

I applaud the arrival of four historic properties into the City’s ownership. I have a few recommendations (offered at no charge;) :

Jacksonville Courthouse Building

First, I agree that a public/private partnership for the care and maintenance of each of these properties is the way to go and many thanks to those organizations and people who have committed already.

Next, I would like to propose that the better place for the Britt Festival offices (when they are ready to move here from Medford) be located in the Nunan Plaza of shop spaces on G Street. My reasoning here is that those buildings have been vacant for quite a while and already have modern amenities that would make the move simpler for Britt staff.

This would leave the Court House available – with some modifications – for a central meeting space. Removing some interior walls downstairs could provide a dance floor or event space for a less expensive alternative than building a new meeting hall.

I’m not privy to all the needs to modernize the Court House nor what the Britt staff requires, but I do think this is a better solution, building-use wise.

My 2c.
