May 27, 1969 – June 30, 2022

David “Herstle” Jones III died peacefully at home, surrounded by family on June 30, 2022. He lived heroically for seventeen joyful months after his diagnosis of glioblastoma brain cancer.

Herstle is survived by his wife Kelly, his daughter Kiana, and his son Holden. He is also survived by his father and stepmother, David (Cathy) Jones, brother Zachary (Kristina) Jones, brother Nicholas (Logan) Jones, and four nephews, Davis, Carter, Hayden, and Karson. He is further survived by his two maternal aunts, Carolyn (Thomas) Robinson, and Marolyn Williams.

Herstle was born in Berkeley, California at Alta Bates Hospital. At three years old he moved to Mendocino, California. He attended the Good Shepherd School, Mendocino Grammar School, and Mendocino High School where he excelled in basketball. As a child, Herstle was diagnosed with Legg Perthes disease, a rare condition of the hips. He was treated for 5 years at Shriners Hospital in San Francisco. It was here, in the company of other challenged children where he learned compassion for others and determination, two characteristics that would stay with him all the years of his life. In high school, he moved to Hawaii and graduated in 1987 from Punahou School along with his future wife, Kelly. Herstle attended Linfield College and Oregon State University. He and Kelly married in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1992. They lived in Portland, Oregon until 1998 when they moved to Jacksonville, Oregon. In 1999 Herstle and Kelly founded Jones & Associates Premier Financial Solutions. Herstle’s goal was to provide comprehensive financial services to clients with expertise in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect. Building relationships with clients, many of whom ultimately became friends was always first on his mind. Herstle and Kelly welcomed their daughter Kiana into the world in 2000 and their son Holden in 2003. Throughout his life, Herstle continued to love basketball. He also enjoyed river fishing and golf. Herstle served his community personally and through Jones Cares, a local outreach program that he and Kelly established in 2016. He served on many advisory boards and as president of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) Rogue Valley. He had the most fun educating others through his weekend radio and TV shows, Jones Financial Talk, and by authoring his book, The New World of Retirement. Herstle was always looking for ways to help and care for others. He always put other people before himself. Many will tell you about his giant smile, his great warm bear hugs, and how he made everyone feel special.

During his 17-month battle with brain cancer, he remained positive. He fought hard until the very end. He continued to give of himself to others. On April 25, 2022, he and Kelly celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary at the Oregon coast. He was so thankful before his passing to see Kiana graduate from Chapman University and Holden complete his first year at the University of Arizona. Herstle left us all way too soon. He will be missed by many. He would want us to remember his motto as we carry on and love each other: “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!”
