Focus on Hanley Farm – November 2020

The wreath has been a cultural decoration throughout history, and for many it has been a symbol of “eternity, an unending circle of life, growth, and everlasting life.” To the early Greeks, the wreath symbolized “accomplishment and victory.” Today, we traditionally place Holiday Wreaths on our front doors, welcoming friends and relatives into our homes to share in the warmth, love, and holiday festivities we offer.

On November 28, from 11:00am to 3:00pm, you can make your Holiday Wreath at Hanley Farm, or purchase a wreath-making kit and take it home to make your wreath. Those who choose to make their wreath at Hanley will make their wreaths safely, observing the protocols of social distancing and wearing a mask. Wreath-making kits will be available at $15 for non-Members, and $10 for SOHS Members. Kits will contain all you need to make a beautiful wreath—a base of grapevines or fruitwood, greens, cones, berries and wire.

If joining us at the farm, you’ll be escorted to a sanitized table where your kit will be waiting for you, and when you’ve completed your wreath, your table and clippers will be sanitized for the next group. Never made a wreath before? Don’t worry, volunteers will be available to assist you!

We look forward to celebrating this joyous time of the year with you at Hanley Farm!

Windows in Time, November 4, noon to 1:00pm—popular Historian and Lecturer Jeff LaLande presents the “History of Bear Creek: From Salmon Stream, to Open Sewer, and Back Again.” Jeff will discuss how early settlers utilized the creek’s water for domestic supply, to power sawmill operations, to irrigate crops, as well as how the water quality and quantity had declined greatly by the early twentieth century. Jeff’s talk is enhanced with several historic photos from Native times to the present.

Windows in Time monthly lunchtime lectures are free, and jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Jackson County Library Services. The November presentation takes place remotely, via Zoom; meeting details will be emailed to you when you register. Register at https://jcls.libcal.com/event/6809364. A recording of the program will also be available on the Jackson County Library Services YouTube channel at https://youtube.com/user/JCLSN2K.
