My View – August 2018

With August here, the Britt Hill comes alive with the sound of music—orchestral music produced by some of the finest classical musicians in the nation. One of the things making the Britt Orchestra so special is that the 100+ musicians literally live in town for three weeks or more—with host families who open their homes and provide housing. When musicians become “part of the family,” it adds to what makes the Britt experience so special…so personal and so unforgettable. Of course, the Britt Orchestra’s leader, Teddy Abrams, will be here too…living in Jacksonville with his host family.

I find it particularly fun watching the musicians scurrying about town, on the way to or from rehearsals, in their summer street clothes, instruments in-tow. During morning rehearsals, the air around the Britt Hill comes alive as the sounds of musical notes are practiced over and over again until perfect. Since most rehearsals are open to the public at no cost, add a visit to the hill to your morning walk and take-in a truly unique musical experience you won’t have anywhere else.

On performance nights, if you’re anything like me, you get a thrill out of watching 100+ musicians playing together, in perfect harmony, on the stage. Despite the heat from the day and from overhead lights, the orchestra plays on, undeterred by Mother Nature and inspired by her at the same time.

If you haven’t yet visited Britt Hill this year, do so during a classical performance from July 25 to August 11. With all new seating and other upgrades, the hill and pavilion have never looked better. And take the kids…they’ll love it!

Speaking of great events, the Oregon Wine Experience celebration at the Bigham Knoll Campus runs from August 20-26. Under the tents, you can attend classes, demonstrations and dinners, including medal celebrations, barrel auctions, a salmon bake, and a Grand Tasting. The event benefits the Asante Foundation’s Children’s Miracle Network and is expected to raise more than $1 million to help kids in our community. This August, join me in celebrating music and wine in our Small Town with Big Atmosphere!
