Thanks to the efforts of the City Council, residents who earn less than $25,000 may qualify to pay zero for the newly-approved Police Surcharge. At its 6/5 meeting, the City Council voted 6-1 for program designed to assist those on fixed incomes and at lower income levels. The vote came after the Public Safety Committee recommended that anyone earning less than $25,000 should pay $0; those earning $25,001 to $30,000 should pay $10 and those above $30,001 should pay the full $20. City Administrator Jeff Alvis and Treasurer Stacey Bray recommended the reduced fees as part of the city’s obligation to offer a relief program per the public safety ordinance. Residents interested in applying for the discounted surcharge should contact city staff at 541-899-1231 for details. The $20 surcharge will appear on the July water bill.
