MOVIE NIGHT at OLD CITY HALL
May’s Movie Night at Old City Hall brings us a change of pace with a classic adventure film, “The Sea Hawk,” starring Errol Flynn with the masterful Claude Rains. This is regarded by many as the best of all the Errol Flynn adventure films, and indeed was filled with symbolism about the rising Nazi tide in early World War II. The meaning is quite clear in a speech given by Queen Elizabeth as she says, “…my loyal subjects, a grave duty confronts us all: To prepare our nation for a war that none of us wants, least of all your queen. We have tried by all means in our power to avert this war. We have no quarrel with the people of Spain (read Germany) or of any other country; but when the ruthless ambition of a man threatens to engulf the world, it becomes the solemn obligation of all free men to affirm that the earth belongs not to any one man, but to all men, and that freedom is the deed and title to the soil on which we exist.”
If you like today’s adventure films, you’ll like this. It’s the springboard for John Williams and his bigger than life Star Wars kind of music. At least I never heard of anyone getting bored with this one. Errol Flynn was never boring.
“The Sea Hawk” will screen Friday, April 13, at 7:00 PM at Old City Hall. There will be a short cartoon to go with it.
