Focus on Hanley Farm – October 2019

Annual Scarecrow Festival—On October 5 & 6 at the Annual Scarecrow Festival from 11:00am-4:00pm, you can make a scarecrow and enter it in the Scarecrow Contest or take it home to protect your gardens and fields. Be sure to take a hayride, paint a pumpkin, bob for apples, and tour the historic Hanley House, too. Admission is free and Scarecrow kits will be available with all you’ll need to make your scarecrow for $15 ($10 for SOHS Members).

The Boogeyman’s Bride–A Haunting Adventure by the Light of the Moon—On the evenings of October 12, 13 and 19, walk through the dark fields of Hanley Farm, but keep your guard up! Strange things have been known to happen out in Hanley Field. Legend has it that there’s a beautiful lady who comes out in the night hours and roams the fields of Hanley. Who is she? Is she the Boogeyman’s Bride? Hold your little ones tight as you venture into the night, keeping an eye out for the mysterious lady haunting the fields of Hanley Farm. The talented students of Crater High School Renaissance Academy will guide you on your tour by lantern light. Gates open at 6:00pm with performances from 7:00-9:00pm. Pumpkin Fest—On October 26 from 11:00am-3:00pm, the Central Point Parks & Recreation Pumpkin Fest returns to Hanley Farm. In addition to pumpkin decorating and a costume contest, there will be hayrides and Hanley House tours. Admission: $2; Children 3 and under, free. All proceeds benefit the Southern Oregon Historical Society.

Windows in Time: Southern Oregon’s Unique Experience During World War II—During WWII, Southern Oregonians covered their windows at night to black-out their homes, scrap metal and paper were collected for the war effort, and look-outs along the coast were built. Jeff LaLande discusses these and other wartime experiences on October 2 at the Medford Library and on October 9 at the Ashland Library, noon-1:00pm each day. Talks are free, and open to the public.

First Tuesdays Pub Talks: Author & Journalist Phil Busse Presents “Southern Oregon Beer: A Pioneering History”—featuring brawling German immigrants, irrepressible women and hometown pride.
