Wildfire Firewise Community Preparedness Day is a national campaign where people to come together on a single day to take action to raise awareness and reduce wildfire risks. Jacksonville is especially vulnerable to wildfires due to many homes being in the wildfire-urban interface, in close proximity to woodlands and forested land. Removing dead vegetation in close proximity to your home and pruning tree limbs so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet above the ground helps reduce fire embers from landing on your house and fire getting into the crowns of trees.
Jacksonville’s Wildfire Community Preparedness Day was held on Saturday May 1, 2021 from 9am to 3pm in the D Street parking lot. The Jacksonville Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Forestry, with assistance from the Jacksonville Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), accepted yard debris from residents who live in one of the Jacksonville Firewise Neighborhoods. It was a great turnout, despite the pouring rain in the morning. Thank you to everyone for helping make our homes safer in case of wildfires.
Now, with the 2021 fire season upon us, is the time to become a Firewise Neighborhood where you and your neighbors learn how to lower the risk of wildfire damage to your home, and how to become prepared for emergencies.
