Whether we like to ski, hike, bike, boat, fish, hunt, camp, photograph, drink the water, breath the air, or just hang out, for many Southern Oregonians our precious environment is the region’s greatest treasure. But nature and humanity present challenges to the environment we value.

Many of us are concerned about one or more of the following issues: earthquakes, forests and fires, pipelines, global warming, toxic chemicals, water availability, recycling, public lands, marijuana grows. Many of us are also concerned about how these issues intersect with social justice.

But we are not helpless! And our elected representatives can either help or hinder the resolution of challenges to our environment.

For this reason, on April 11th 2018, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now, will present a candidate forum on Environmental Challenges. SOCAN is supported in this venture by cosponsors: Southern Oregon Subaru; Ted Gibbs; Geos Institute; Hair on Fire, Oregon; Our Revolution, Southern Oregon; American Association of University Women, Ashland; KS Wild; Sustainability at SOU; Rogue Community College Green Team; Mi Voz Cuenta; Rogue Valley Audubon Society; Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance Community, and Citizens Climate Lobby/Citizens Climate Education.

All declared candidates for their respective parties have been invited to attend and 6 of the 7 have accepted: Democrats Julian Bell, Athena Goldberg, Jeff Golden, and Kevin Stine, Republican Curt Ankerberg, and write-in Independent Party candidate Brenden Kelley.

This non-partisan forum will be Wednesday April 11th from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the Medford Public Library, 205 S. Central Avenue, Medford. It will be free and open to all Southern Oregon residents wishing to learn more about where the candidates stand on environmental issues.
