Speaking of Antiquing – December 2019/January 2020
Gift giving season is upon us. Many people buy items for the people on their list all year-long, but many wait for the holiday seasonal rush. Be it Christmas or Hanukkah, shopping begins the day after Thanksgiving in many households.
We’ve all seen the transition from running around from store to store for just the right gift to scrolling through online platform venues for gifts. We all know the one person who is extremely difficult to buy for. They buy what they like or need when they want it, and that leaves gift givers scratching their heads. We also know the person who has a list and they make sure you buy only what’s on it, because they say so!
While lists are great for ideas, reality is (at least with me) that a gift is what one wishes to give rather than what one expects to get. Pickety Place is chock full of unique gifts and stocking stuffer ideas. Tchotchkes anyone? It’s a place to take your time browsing the floor and discover items suitable for any family member or friend. Here, you’ll find yourself saying “so-and-so would love this.”
You might know someone dear who loves to drink their tea out of vintage teacups. There is some lace for sewing projects or linens for a table. What about the pocketknives, perfect for pocket or purse? Remember how much you loved flipping your Zippo lighter? Just add lighter fluid. Vintage hankies can be used to wrap a beautiful piece of jewelry. There are several lovely Prisms that can be adorned with other items to make a hanging rainbow maker for a south-facing window.
Jewelry is a wonderful item to gift. Brooches are fun because they are uncommon, and the wearer will have something unique. If they love whimsey, flowers, rhinestones, animals, or just for the color, choosing one for them will be fun. Necklaces, bracelets and rings fly out the door, so shop early. No two cameos are the same.
Maybe your person likes vintage games, or cookware. Pyrex is always welcome. Vintage bowls can be the perfect thing for display or use. A teapot is classic… vases are always lovely so just choose your style. Don’t forget the vintage cast iron. It is classic for daily use and loved for camping. Crocks and jugs are never out of style, and we have wooden boxes of every shape and size. How about and old galvanized mailbox with a red metal flag? What about a crystal decanter for the home bar? Lovely stemware is not just for holidays. What about a vintage German stein for the beer drinker?
Vintage quilts are always desired. Everyone needs to cozy up with something on the couch while it’s raining. Dress up with a vintage handbag or hat—vintage clothes are fun, and the coats are very warm. And, there’s artwork aplenty. There might be a Fredrick Remington or a Britt poster. Vintage, colorized prints are always appreciated.
No matter whom you’re gifting this holiday season, come in and see what jumps off the shelf!
