Britt Music & Arts Festival announces that “Symphony for Nature,” the documentary film that tells the story about the Britt Orchestra’s performance at Crater Lake in 2016, has been selected to be screened as part of the 2018 Ashland Independent Film Festival. This will be the film festival premiere of the film, which is being entered in film festivals around the country. “Symphony for Nature” is a 30-minute documentary film co-produced by Owsley Brown Presents and Britt that follows the process of creating and performing a large orchestral composition in a natural setting on the rim of Crater Lake. “Symphony for Nature” will be screened twice: on Thursday, April 12 at 6:40 p.m. and on Sunday, April 15 at 6:40 p.m. at the Ashland Street Cinema, located at 1644 Ashland St., Ashland. Tickets for the Ashland Independent Film Festival will be available beginning March 26.
The documentary originally aired on Southern Oregon Public Television in 2017, and has been aired by PBS stations across the nation in 2018.
A regional summer attraction since 1963, the Britt Orchestra is drawing national attention to Oregon and Crater Lake National Park. Donna Briggs, Britt’s President and CEO says, “The Britt Board of Directors and staff are excited about the investment that they made in this documentary and believe that this film will engage, inspire and entice new tourism to our region and new audiences to the Britt Orchestra.”
Composer Michael Gordon’s orchestral work “Natural History” was commissioned by Britt to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the National Parks Service, and the work was performed six times at Crater Lake National Park under the direction of conductor Teddy Abrams. The performances were presented to an estimated audience of 2,500 people over the course of two days on July 29 & 30, 2016. The premiere of “Natural History” by the Britt Orchestra, with 15 Klamath Steiger Butte tribal drummers plus auxiliary brass and percussion, was inspired by Crater Lake National Park, Oregon’s only national park.
