I am pleased to report that plans for our Cemetery Kiosk project continue to move forward. A contract has been signed to have a concrete slab poured which will serve as a foundation for the new pavilion. This work should be completed in April at which time construction of the pavilion can begin. We are currently looking at various products that could be used as sign posts marking the cemetery blocks to guide visitors to the grave sites of loved ones. This project, once completed, will greatly enhance the visitor’s experience of our beautiful Pioneer Cemetery.

As reported in the March Jacksonville Review, work has begun on a full restoration of the Mary Teresa Agnes Hanna plot in the Catholic Section. In February, we took advantage of a few mild days and started the process of removing the heavy sandstone curbing cap pieces, the headstone and base, moving them to the side. As the weather permits, work at the site will continue as we prepare the area for full restoration.

Our Marker Cleaning Workshops resume on Saturday, April 20, 9:00am until 12 noon. Volunteers meet at the Sexton’s Tool House where the proper cleaning tools and supplies will be made available along with instructions on how to safely clean the headstones and monuments. This is a hands-on project so be sure to dress for the work. You may want to bring along a stool to sit on, a hat and sunscreen. This is a fun and very worthwhile project helping to preserve these pieces of art for future generations to see and enjoy.

Coming in May is the return of our History Saturday in the Cemetery program and our Tuesday Evening Cemetery Strolls. The Saturday, May 11, History Saturday topic will be “From a Gold Town to a Trading and Business Center.” Hear about Jacksonville’s early business leaders and merchants and how the town prospered. The program starts at 10:00am and is approximately 90 minutes long and includes a short walking tour. The Cemetery Stroll on Tuesday evening, May 14, begins at 6:30pm and will focus on “Some of the Cemetery’s Mysteries and Myths.” The stroll will conclude by 8:00 pm. We suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent for both of these programs. Parking is available within the cemetery grounds around the traffic circle at the top of the Cemetery Road where you will meet your docents. Both programs are free and no advance reservations are required. Donations are always appreciated and help support the work of our organization.
