If you happened to be driving north on Fifth Street in Jacksonville in mid-December, you may have seen a lot of activity on the sidewalk in front of Jacksonville’s City Hall. The sidewalk from C Street to D Street was removed in front of City Hall and a new sidewalk was poured. Fourteen granite blocks were evenly spaced along the length of the sidewalk that tell a brief history of Jacksonville. “A Path Through Time” tells the story of Jacksonville from just before the discovery of gold up to the present day. The Jacksonville Boosters Club successfully raised the funds for the project and would like to thank everyone who donated.
The following groups generously supported “A Path Through Time:”
- Chaney Family Foundation
- City of Jacksonville Lodging Tax Grant
- Jacksonville Boosters Club and Foundation
- Schwemm Family Foundation
- The Kinsman Foundation
- West Family Foundation
Thank you also to the anonymous individual donors who contributed to this project.
The Jacksonville Boosters hope you will take a stroll down Fifth Street in front of City Hall and enjoy the story of Jacksonville. If your walk is during the week, don’t forget the display of historical photos that line the walls of the main hallway inside of City Hall. Visitors are welcome. We hope that everyone who comes to Jacksonville will be able to enjoy the history of our quaint, little town.
There will be more to come in the upcoming months. An interpretive panel will be placed on the City Hall grounds that details the history of the Jackson County Courthouse and the Jackson County Jail.
Hope to see you all at City Hall and the Courthouse grounds.
