On behalf of our Board Members and volunteers, we sincerely thank the Jacksonville Boosters Club for their continued support and recent donation of $3,500. The generous gift allowed us to purchase an 8’ x 12’ storage shed which was placed down by the Cemetery Maintenance Shop. We also want to thank the City of Jacksonville for installing a concrete slab that the shed now rests on.
Also want to thank Steve Casaleggio and the Boosters Project Committee for their work in reorganizing the interior of the Sexton’s Tool House and providing us with valuable storage and work space. We sincerely appreciate the City for having lighting added as well as additional electrical outlets, enabling us to be able to work year-round on restoration projects.
History Walk Cemetery Tour, Saturday, April 9, 11am-12:30pm—Our friends and fellow promoters of local history, the McKee Bridge Historical Society, will lead a history walk through the Jacksonville Cemetery, “They Passed Over Jacksonville Hill.” Participants will learn the stories of many interesting and important Applegate Valley Pioneers buried in the Jacksonville Cemetery—including one who never existed at all! More information about the event and the sometimes-wild history of the Applegate watershed is available at www.mckeebridge.org. After the tour and during April, view an exhibit at Jacksonville Library, “Applegate Patrons of Peter Britt,” showcasing Peter Britt portraits, biographies and maps.
Marker Cleaning Workshop, Saturday, April 16, 9am-noon—Interested in a fun and rewarding volunteer project? Join us on the third Saturday of each month, April 16 through September 17, and learn the proper and safe way to clean headstones and monuments and the tools to use. We meet at the top of the Cemetery Road by the Sexton’s Tool House. Instructions and supplies are provided along with our appreciation. Dress for the project as you may get a little wet and we suggest a hat, sunscreen and perhaps a stool to sit on.
History Saturday in the Cemetery, Saturday, May 14, 10-11:30am—Our very popular History Saturday in the Cemetery programs resume in May. A new and different topic will be presented on the second Saturday of each month through September 10. The May program will be on “Changing Burial Practices” over the years.
