My View – April 2024

THIS MONTH, I’m looking forward to putting in some extra time on our woodland trails as our annual wildflower season bursts forth. From my view, a great way to spend time and get exercise is out on the trails spotting wildflowers—and there are plenty to spot including the world-famous Gentner’s Fritillaria, one of the rarest native plants on the planet… that happens to grow right here in our woods. They’re easy to spot with their bright maroon, red, flowery bells—look for them near oak trees off the trail —but don’t touch or disturb them in any way as they are endangered and protected. While you’re at it, keep an eye open for Shooting Stars, White Trillium, Hounds Tongue, Fawn Lillies and more! The Jacksonville Woodlands Association has a great trail and wildflower guide available online at www.jvwoodlands.org and a fold-out one at some trailheads. Thanks for joining me as we enjoy this time of year in our Small Town with Big Atmosphere…and Wildflowers!
