Letter to the Editor
Sunday afternoon, April 15th, about 50 lucky Jacksonville folks were treated to a rare, and remarkable, program of music at the library. I wish the whole town could have heard and enjoyoed it, as those of us present did.
The Friends of the Library brought us a concert of music, undoubtedly unheard before in this town, from the first century Greek, to modern songs written and sung by the truly multi-talented musician, Lauren Pelton, of Red Wing, Minnesota. She plays twenty or more instruments, many of them first made centuries ago, and has a beautiful singing voice to accompany some of them.
If I listed the instruments or the pieces that she played and sang, the reader has most likely never heard of them. Yet the audience sat, enthralled, with each of the 25 or so short pieces she performed. In additon, she added a bit of music history to the program. It lasted a bit over an hour, and I could easily have sat for another hour or two to hear more.
The Friends of the Library are to be heartily commended for finding this rare jewel and bringing her to Jacksonville for our listening pleasure. And thanks go also to several of our towns Booster members, who helped Lauren unload and load her many instruments into a vehicle. I encourage the reader to watch for more musical and other programs at the library on Sunday afternoons. I would like to see the Community Room filled to overflowing with townfolk.
Sincerely,
Dee Evers
