Do you enjoy sharing local history with family, friends, and guests? Would you like to learn more about Jacksonville, the town that was the 19th Century commercial, governmental, and social center of Southern Oregon? Are you a new or relatively new resident and would like to know more about your hometown?
Historic Jacksonville, Inc. is looking for volunteers to help tell Jacksonville’s storied history through the tours and events that we offer throughout the year. Summer is the “high season” for the many cultural tourists who like to explore Jacksonville’s history (or just want something to do while they are in town)—and we need your help!
We need guides from May 27 through September 2 for our 10am Saturday morning Walk through History tours. These 1-hour walking tours share the story of how Jacksonville evolved from a gold rush camp to the late 1800s hub of Southern Oregon. Guides usually volunteer for 2 to 4 Saturdays each summer. Training, talking points, and historic images are provided. Docents have guidebooks so memorization is not required. Costuming is encouraged but not required—and we do have an extensive costume collection and can outfit you!
This is a great way to share Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District, the first group of buildings on the West Coast that was so designated! It’s also a great way for both you and your guests to learn the stories of the people behind the many buildings that boast historic names and dates.
If you are interested, please contact Historic Jacksonville, Inc. at info@historicjacksonville.org or 541-245-3650. Help us bring Jacksonville’s fascinating history to life—and life to its history!
