My View – March 2025

THIS MONTH, I am proud to publish a new column by Mike McClain, dubbed “Vital Volunteers,” wherein Mike will bring us an up-close-and-personal perspective on the many volunteers and non-profit groups that make Jacksonville thrive.

As we know, Jacksonville is a small town with a big heart, and we are well-known for our historic charm, cultural vibrancy, being a close-knit community…and a hub for volunteers. Dozens upon dozens of selfless individuals help preserve our town’s character while simultaneously enriching their own lives. The benefits of volunteering extend far beyond civic duty, creating a win-win scenario where both the community and our volunteers experience significant social and health-related rewards…think Blue Zone, here.

From the Garden Club, featured on our cover, to the Jacksonville Woodlands Association, Boosters Club, Rotary Clubs, Britt Music & Arts Festival, Historic Jacksonville, Inc., the Chamber of Commerce, Firewise, Art Presence, and other groups, there are countless events and projects that only happen due to the generosity of residents. Volunteers help organize festivals, maintain historic landmarks, assist at local venues, and preserve the town’s many hiking trails. Without them, Jacksonville’s charm and sense of community would be difficult to sustain. Volunteers keep our town running smoothly but also foster a spirit of unity and civic pride that defines the true essence of Jacksonville.

Numerous studies have proven that volunteering improves both mental and physical health. Engaging in community service reduces stress, combats depression, and fosters a sense of purpose. Volunteers often experience lower blood pressure, improved cognitive function, and even increased longevity…not to mention stronger social connections. In Jacksonville, where a significant portion of the population consists of older adults, (me included now!) serving as a volunteer provides a valuable opportunity to stay active and engaged. It encourages friendships, enhances self-esteem, gives one a greater sense of belonging and builds a stronger community.

Especially in challenging times, Jacksonville will only be as strong as its citizens—and will always reflect the dedication of its volunteers. I’m pleased to say that our town is stronger than ever, thanks to everyone who provides this vital volunteer energy, ensuring its preservation, vibrancy, and well-being. By fostering a strong volunteer culture, Jacksonville will continue being a wonderful Small Town with Big Atmosphere!
