Collage comes from the French verb “colle,” meaning “to glue or to stick together.” A collage describes a piece of art, sometimes music, that is combined from separate forms, pictures, shapes, paper, fabric, and other materials to combine a whole piece that works together. It can be found in objects, coins, shells, textiles, paper and pictures, or the distinct difference in shapes and forms. Our curated exhibits for September do just that, they “collage.” In English, collage is generally a thing, an object, or created art piece, almost always a noun. But for this show we will “verb-alize” the term “to collage” rather than a collage, although our separate art exhibits are both, and complement each other beautifully.

Guest artist, Cherrie Van Syoc, uses circles, lines, shapes, and color, with acrylic on Yupo paper, to create abstract notions of disparate patterns, drawing the eye around as motion. They invite comments and evoke wonder. Her titles speak to the soul of the piece.

Char Wirfs, Member Artist of the Month, uses textiles, pictures, and stitchery to create meditations and stories. From a gorgeous table runner to wall hangings, they come together one stitch at a time in an assemblage bringing shapes and forms into focus as textile collage.

Members’ art remains through September and flows as a curated stream throughout the main gallery. Works by new members present dinosaurs, photography, and interesting fresh perspectives. The Gift Shop also has new jewelry, chocolates with a bit of spice, journals and sketchbooks, and wonderful artsy crayons for the wee ones in dinosaur, sparkly butterfly, fall color rock crayons, and space shapes.

Opening Party! is after Labor Day on September 9, 1-4pm. Artists are always available to discuss and talk about their art. Wine tastings—a surprise! Check for more information on our social media.

Talk of the Town, September 21, 6-7:30pm—this month is a wine talk and tasting by award-winning winemaker John Quinones. Quinones has 30+ years’ experience in the enology field and was winemaker at RoxyAnn for 5+ years. Now vintner to his own label, Diamondback Wines, John will talk about his time in the wine world, why his label is named that, wines, and the wonderful, and important, relationship between wine and art. He says, “I’m often asked about my favorite things as a winemaker, one of them is I like demystifying wine for people, and enjoy taking technically-complicated topics and breaking them down into terms that are easy to understand.” Tastings of his wines will be offered, and Diamondback Wines will be available for purchase.

Art Presence members have art displayed at Hummingbird Estate and Dos Mariposas Vineyards and Lavender Farm. Please check our social media page for updates.

This month, our hours will shift to autumn hours—Thursday-Saturday, noon-5pm, Sunday, 10am-3pm.
