Summer is for the Birds—Summer is flying by. There’s an old saying, “Further in summer than the birds,” which basically refers to the time of later summer, the days of heat, when buzzing bugs are more prevalent than the sweet birdsong of early summer. It’s really hard to believe it’s August.
However, in the main gallery at Art Presence there will be birds! Beautiful birds of bronze, that look like they are about to move. Our guest artist for August is award-winning and world- renowned avian sculptor, Stefan Savides (www.savidessculpture.com).
“I came into this world totally fascinated with birds,” Savides says, “They are my earliest childhood memory and have been a lifelong fascination I’ve never strayed from.”
Stefan began his artist life studying taxidermy at the young age of 12. He became well known in that field, was a sought-after teacher, and the private on-site taxidermist for the Cabelas when they went on safari. It was these years that fine-tuned Savides’ understanding of anatomy. Today, he devotes full attention to creating his beloved birds in bronze and considers himself a “recovering taxidermist.” Savides says, “I feel my job is to give each person who views my work a personal insight into the private life of each species I sculpt.”
Walt Wirfs is August’s Member Artist of Month. Wirfs creates art in a variety of mediums, and a wide range of subjects. From his winsome sneakers, and detailed pencil drawings, to his plein air oils and portraits, his work evokes a sense of calm and place.
The Main Gallery in August will feature all new art in our member’s show. Striking new bowls by Chris Anderson, pink roses in oil from Jean Mailander, intricate textiles stitched by Char Wirfs, and vibrant abstract expressions created by Deanna St. Martin, are just a tease of the extraordinary membership art on display.
Opening Party! Birds, wine & video—August 5, 1-4pm.
Our August Talk of the Town has a time change. Because the normal date falls during Oregon Wine Experience, and our featured author is likely to be part of that event, we have rescheduled the date to Saturday, August 12, 1-3pm.
Our featured author is Southern Oregon’s own Jack Costa. Costa’s book, Wine Hiking Oregon, profiles 7 Southern Oregon hiking trails, turn-by-turn, and then directs you to a winery close by. He even suggests a wine and includes tasting notes. It’s a great book to plan hiking and wining throughout Oregon. Costa is a passionate presenter about both so mark your calendar. He’ll be talking about his book, answering questions, and signing. Books are available to purchase at Art Presence.
Art in Wineries features Dara Daniel and her brilliant birds, bison, and horses at Dos Mariposas Vineyard & Lavender Farm. Through August at Hummingbird Estate, are the vibrantly serene pastels and acrylics of Sue and Steve Bennett. Showstoppers you don’t want to miss.
Come keep cool at Art Presence, Jacksonville’s fine art gallery.
