Ted and Susan Shaffer
Ted and Susan Shaffer of Jacksonville, Oregon have started Cascade Cedar, a new business designing and building outdoor furniture. In 2003, after relocating from Santa Barbara, Ted was frustrated by the lack of uniquely-designed outdoor tables available for their deck that reflected the rustic décor of their new home on the Applegate River. As a professional Industrial Designer, Ted chose to make his own table that when completed, was the inspiration for a new business that’s now Cascade Cedar. The Shaffer’s new business works well with Susan taking care of all of the business and administrative functions while Ted designs and builds outdoor furniture in their shop.
Ted explains, “Building furniture has been a side interest and activity of mine for more than fifteen years. I’ve designed and built many of the custom features into the homes that Susan and I have built for ourselves and for my clients over the years. My education was in Industrial Design, so I learned to make patterns and molds in wood and other materials. Making cedar furniture is simply an extension of that expertise…and, it’s a lot of fun!”
For now, Cascade Cedar offers cedar tables in four standard sizes to accommodate 4-8 people. “However,” Ted notes, “custom sizes are considered upon request.” Price points range from $785.00 – $1,550.00 in a variety of finishes and textures with free local shipping.
