Jacksonville – Robert “Bob” Eugene Stevens, 92, died Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at Providence Hospital in Medford following a bout with pneumonia.
Bob is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joyce Anita (Everson) Stevens, his sons, Ritchie (Julie) and Nathan (Juliet) and 4 granddaughters.
Born and raised in Medford, he was the son of Fred and Irene (Petty) Stevens. He graduated from Medford High School. Further education resulted in degrees from Oregon State University (BS 1951) and the University of California, Berkeley (MS – 1955 and PhD – 1965). He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps. (1946-47) and the US Army (1953-55).
Bob was an entomologist and worked for the Oregon State Board of Forestry, the US Forest Service and was a faculty member at Colorado State University. An avid traveler, his job and leisure time took he & Joyce around the globe meeting various colleagues & friends.
After moving from Colorado to Jacksonville, OR in 1988, Bob served on the Jacksonville City Council and later on the City Planning Commission. He served as a board member and president of the Jackson County Historical Society.
In the 90’s Bob penned an article called Bug Of The Month for the Jacksonville Review. He used the pseudonym “The Entomologist”. Bob enjoyed sharing his passion of insects and with his sharp wit this became an anticipated contribution to the paper.
He was a devoted husband & father who was incredibly supportive & always there when needed. He will be missed.
Due to the current health crisis, there will be no service. He will be interred in the National Cemetery.
Thanks for the great eulogy to Bob Stevens. He was one of my favorite persons to work with on many projects for the city.
I will always be grateful for his dedication, wisdom and support for the Jacksonville Woodlands.
What a great life.
