Decision on Britt Pedestrian Ban Postponed
At its August 21 meeting, the City Council tabled the issue of closing Fir Street to pedestrian traffic during Britt concerts. Noting that the issue will be discussed and decided at a later date, Jacksonville Mayor Paul Becker stated that in the meantime, the city will continue operating as-is, treating Fir Street as a fire lane during concerts.
During public comment, Bernie Croucher who resides on South Oregon Street, was the only citizen to address the issue before council. Croucher, a longstanding member of the Public Safety Committee, expressed disappointment that the committee was not consulted on the issue. The Mayor responded that the issue was not legally within the prevue of the committee and that Public Safety Chair Dan Winterburn agreed with that assessment. Croucher agreed to meet with the mayor personally and discuss the matter further.
No action is expected on the matter until after the conclusion of the 2012 Britt season.
