There’s plenty new to learn during a pandemic, but some basics remain the same: the essentials of reading, writing, and arithmetic along with exercising, laughing, and playing. All elementary schools in Jackson County, public and private, will remain closed to in-person instruction until at least early November. The recent closure creates a mad dash for parents to find suitable, safe childcare for this rapidly-approaching fall semester.
The State mandates lead to cancellations of all events using the existing classrooms, field, and ballroom at Bigham Knoll. So, Brooke Ashland, Managing Partner of the Bigham Knoll Group, reached out to Larry Smith, well-respected Jacksonville Elementary School teacher. Smith and Ashland have teamed-up to create a school environment available for students in grades 1-6 using the existing spaces. Ashland reported that, “There aren’t a lot of places with this much outdoor space, and enough internet bandwidth to host multiple classes of kids all on Zoom at the same time.” Larry Smith is serving as the Center’s Director.
