NEO-COUNTRY STYLE
A home decor trend has emerged as enduring, inviting and comfortable – Modern Farmhouse, Contemporary Country, Rustic Chic – whatever the style name, it evokes warmth and interest. A place to put your boots up – urban or ranch! Rooms where friends and family gather for laughter, food and relaxation. The feel is “Come on in!”
Gentle, natural and grounded – this lifestyle remains a favorite no matter the locale, urban or rural. After a fast-paced day of work or driving in traffic, the refuge created in a rustic idyll will soothe your soul.
The elements of this style are primarily natural in origin. The juxtaposition of timeworn pieces with contemporary lines and finishes creates a fresh take on what we once knew as Country Style. Today’s farmhouse look will bring stronger elements than a couple of rooster art prints or daisy print café curtains of yore.
Men and women find a luxury in slipping into an animal hide chair, feeling the textural durability and substance beneath them. You don’t have saddle this pony to enjoy the afternoon! The family-friendly benefits of durable materials is a real PLUS factor in making these choices for long-lasting quality and style.
Begin with a contemporary area rug. Ideas include natural fibers like sisal and jute, a real animal skin, or a wool/wool blend. If the rug has a bold, playful pattern, you bring instant modernity to the space – keeping the feeling casual and unpretentious.
Add upholstered seating in smooth or textured leather, linen or cotton fabrics (blends are best for keeping their shape over time). Wood or metal frames (arms capped in wood for comfort) in clean lines will keep the look modern.
Blend in a terrific wing back, tufted chair for that countrified gentlemen/lady. Ottomans are essential for kicking back and taking a load off. Have some fun with your choices here. Opportunities for pops of color or textural interest abound in small pieces.
THE JEWELRY
Home decor accessories act like jewelry to your fashion statement. Pull the elements of wood, metal, stone, horn and glass together in interesting pieces. Mirrors, lamps, lamp shades, fluffy cushions, magazine racks/baskets, candle holders, sconces, vases, flatware, art frames – a seemingly endless array of ways to modernize the Country style. There’s so much fun to be had in exploring local shops and out-of-the-way places for those pieces that make your style statement.
THE LARGER ELEMENTS
Ceiling beams, stone fireplace walls, wood and stone flooring, stone window sills – these major architectural and functional elements provide the mat board to frame your Modern Farmhouse creation. Go bold to create strong focal points. Quiet things down to keep the feeling relaxed and unfrenzied. Blend large grain, rustic wood surfaces with more refined and tight grain wood species. Get the lighting right and whether it’s day or night, gloomy or bright, your contemporary take on Country style will give back hours of enjoyment.
MI CASA, SU CASA
Whether you choose a whole house look or a single area, this wonderful style will lend a rich, satisfying comfort to your home that will welcome and embrace all who enter.

Can you give some general advice for a beginner regarding decorating a house in this this type of country style. It’s an overwhelming task, and I’m not sure where to start! Any thoughts on good colors or types of lighting to keep a “country/rustic/outdoor” feel.
