Movie Night at Old City Hall is Friday, June 12, 2015
Zounds! “They seek him here… They seek him there… Those Frenchies seek him everywhere… Is he in Heaven… Is he in Hell… That damned elusive Pimpernel.”
Yes, it’s The Scarlet Pimpernel and it is scheduled for our June show at Old City Hall. This is the Leslie Howard – Merle Oberon version. Merle is sensational in the role that made her a star. Raymond Massey, in his role of Chauvelin, is as menacing a figure as the screen has ever seen. But, it is Leslie Howard who steals this film… alternating between a jaded, poppycock figure of a dandy and fop to a stout and fearless hero bound and determined to save his friends from the French guillotine. His performance is electrifying and is testimony to his great acting ability.
This film presentation is a preview of another Leslie Howard appearance later in August when we will look back on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain where the Spitfire aircraft spelled such an important role in the defense of England. This will be a very special event with an interview of a survivor of the London Blitz. Look for details in a coming announcement.
The Scarlet Pimpernel is scheduled to show at 7 PM on Friday, June 12th. Doors will open at 6:30. There will also be a cartoon… “The Scarlet Pumpernickel” featuring Daffy Duck.
See you at the movies… Paul Becker
