Bags Even Arrive via Bike!

Volunteers collect filled Bags

Saturday, April 9 – Another great day for the Medford Food Project!

More than 100 Neighborhood Coordinators collected food from 1,100 households throughout Medford and Jacksonville, and delivered 14,400 lbs of food to Medford Food Project Headquarters at Central High School. That’s about 75% higher than last time. In Ashland, 145 people brought in an estimated 19,000 pounds collected from 2,200 homes to the Ashland Emergency Food Bank. And, in Talent & Phoenix, 385 contributors gave 3,538 pounds, collected by 28 neighborhood coordinators.

The total collected by all three Food Projects came to a whopping 18.5 tons!

This amazing grass roots effort started by John Javna in Ashland  – which now has more than 24% of household participation! 18 Neighborhood Coordinators are in Jacksonville – and more are, of course, very welcome! The Coordinators visit their neighbors, take them a Green Bag with some instructions – and every 2 months (on the second Saturday of the month), the Coordinator picks up the filled bags (and leaves a new bag) and delivers them to the high school.

100’s of volunteers then carry the bags from the cars that pull up along the curb, then remove all of the donated contents from the bags, sort them by type of items, then they are loaded onto trucks for the various Food Banks – this is a true cooperation of neighbors, friends, and food banks of all type and denomination! What an impressive and moving sight.  Next Pickup Day: Saturday, June 11th.

A True Community Effort!
