Join Carrie Beekman at Jacksonville’s historic Beekman House on Saturday, September 20, for Historic Jacksonville’s last living history tour of 2014 before Carrie moves permanently to Portland where her brother Ben lives. The Beekman House is located at 470 E. California Street in Jacksonville, and the family will welcome callers at 1:30 and 3pm.
It’s 1932. The country is deep into the Great Depression. In Jacksonville, locals are digging up backyards and streets looking for any gold left from the town’s original gold rush. Hoboes go house to house looking for hand outs. And Carrie and Ben Beekman and friends are closing up this Jacksonville landmark, going through family belongings, commenting on current events, and reminiscing about life in the late 1800s.
Cornelius Beekman, their father, was Jacksonville’s wealthiest and most prominent pioneer. He built the family home around 1873, and the Beekmans were the only family to occupy it. The house remains completely furnished with original family furniture and artifacts.
These $10 Living History tours will begin at 1:30 and 3pm and are limited to 15 people each. Reservations are suggested but not required. Historic Jacksonville, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and proceeds benefit historic preservation of Jacksonville properties.
