June Cemetery Events and Activities
History Saturday, June 10, 10:00am—Plan on joining us for History Saturday in the Cemetery on June 10, when our program will be on what travel by stage coach might have been like, as presented by Joan Hess and Vivienne Grant. The program begins at 10:00am and is approximately 90 minutes long. Meet your Docents at the top of the Cemetery Road where you will find parking available. There is no charge and advance reservations are not required. We do accept donations in support of our work in Jacksonville’s Pioneer Cemetery. We suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and a hat.
Tuesday Evening Stroll, June 13, 6:30pm—Join our Docents, Dee Reynar, Ellen Martin and Gail Nicholson as they take you on a Tuesday Evening Stroll through the City Section of the Cemetery on June 13. The stroll begins at 6:30pm and will conclude by 8:00pm. Meet your Docents at the top of the Cemetery Road where you will find parking available. There is no charge for the tour and no advance reservations are required. We do appreciate donations which help support our restoration and preservation work in Jacksonville’s Pioneer Cemetery. Wear comfortable walking shoes and perhaps sunscreen and a hat.
Marker Cleaning Workshop, June 17, 9:00am—This is a fun and interesting volunteer project helping to clean our Cemetery headstones and monuments of accumulated dirt, moss, lichen and other plant growth. Meet at the Sexton’s Tool House, inside the traffic circle at the top of the Cemetery Road, to pick up your tools, supplies and directions as to where we will be working. Dress for the project as you may get a little wet and dirt splatter. You may want to bring along a stool to sit on, a hat and sunscreen. We normally work until 12 noon but whatever time you can spare will be greatly appreciated.
