Gather your family and friends and lace up your sneakers. It’s time for the first Jacksonville 1851 Gold Rush Run/Walk in the Jacksonville Woodlands, with 10K, 5K, and 2K course options. The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and co-sponsor Public Lands outdoor store, located at 293 Rossanley Dr. in Medford, are excited to launch this new event geared for the whole family. As a nod to Jacksonville’s gold mining history, this outdoor adventure is sure to further endear the old-town spirit in our hearts.

“It is our goal, as a community, to provide exciting events highlighting Jacksonville and all we have to offer. It all starts with our history,” says Helena Lopez, one of those in charge. “This run/walk will do this in an entertaining way like no other run.”

Set your rooster for a 6:30-7am arrival time on Saturday, September 30, at the top of the hill inside the Britt Gardens Pavilion. Parking will be in the public lot on D Street, with complimentary trolley rides up the hill from 6:30-8am. A course map will be available on the Chamber’s website for the event at www.1851GoldRushRun.com. The starting gun for the runners-only 10K route goes off at 8, the 5K for runners and walkers begins at 8:15, and the 2K walk/run course takes off at 8:30. The cost is $25 for ages 18 and up, $15 for those 17 and under. For safety reasons, there will be no pets or strollers allowed. The Britt Gardens will offer a place for secure bag and coat storage, as well as music, promo booths, and an aerobic warm-up session.

Early sign-up will guarantee a free 1851 Gold Rush Run T-shirt. It’s a special edition with “Skinner,” the mascot and Jacksonville’s historical gold miner, running lickity-split toting his mining gear.

A sincere thank you goes to Public Lands for their financial support and expertise in helping coordinate this experience in the great outdoors.

“We hope people will stay afterwards, grab a bite to eat, check out our unique stores, and maybe stay overnight.” Helena added. “With a bit of luck, we may be able to turn this into an annual event. I am excited!”

So, stake your claim, sign up for this new and exciting activity at www.1851goldrushrun.com, and get ready to head for the hill—the Britt hill. Oh, and keep your eyes open for Skinner or one of his partners along the trail.
