Focus on the Farm – Hanley Farm Partners With Jacksonville Market CSA!
Pamela Sasseen, Hanley Farm Volunteer
Exciting news! We’ve partnered with Jacksonville Market CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)! Ken Snoke (a.k.a. “Farmer Ken,”) founder of Jacksonville Market CSA, and Richard Rogers, Hanley Farm Manager, have begun preparations for mid-May planting. The farm, in partnership with Ken’s Hootenanny Farm, Savage Family Farm, Walker Creek Farm, and several local orchards, will be providing fresh, local produce, eggs and more to consumers.
The Community Supported Agriculture concept has grown in popularity over the past 20 years. Throughout the United
States, thousands of families have joined their local CSA. CSA’s are composed of local farmers who grow a variety of fresh produce and products; and consumers who purchase a CSA “share,” or subscription. In return, the member receives farm-fresh, local food throughout the farming season. The beauty of this farmer-consumer relationship is that the consumer knows where their food is coming from and in many instances, knows the farmer! Our Jacksonville Market CSA is a local group, and food is grown just a few miles from the CSA consumer-member’s home.
Historically, when originally conceived, the CSA was set up as a group of people who communally would buy a farm, hire personnel, and take a share of whatever the farm produced. However, if the farm had a bad year, then of course, the consumer-participants would, too. Not many CSA’s using the “communal” concept exist today, for obvious reasons!
Our CSA ensures income for our local farmers and fresh, locally-grown products to consumers, making for a win-win situation. Hanley Farm is proud to be the newest member of this group!
