The Annual Heritage Plant Sale at Hanley Farm will be April 28 and 29 from 10am to 3pm. All three generations of the Hanley family, across 125 years, contributed to building the lush and unique landscape that is Hanley Farm today. Volunteers at the Southern Oregon Historical Society propagate starts from as many as 50 different varieties of plants.
This is your chance to bring some history into your garden! More than 500 of these perennials are on sale this year. There are purple and lavender lilacs descended from some that Martha Hanley planted in the mid-1800s. There are peonies, flowering quince, iris and daylilies. There are hellebores and sweet little snow drops that bloom in February, asters and Japanese anemones that bloom in the fall, and many more!
Tomato and pepper plants will again be available from our volunteer grower.
A special feature this year is a new Shakespeare garden being grown by Family Nurturing Center at Hanley Farm. Rhonda Nowak will be there to explain how the plantings are found in Shakespeare’s plays. Literary gardens can be a special feature in your garden, too. The raffle prize this year is a container Shakespeare Garden, ready to be the focal point of your garden.
Other activities include a children’s “plant-and-take-home” area and wagon rides. Self-guided garden tours can be taken with brochures provided explaining the family history and unique plantings in the landscape.
In addition, food by the Extension Service Master Food Preservers is available for purchase and the Hanley Mercantile will have special gift items for sale.
Enjoy the day in the beautiful surroundings of historic Hanley Farm. All proceeds benefit the preservation of and public access to the Southern Oregon Historical Society’s Hanley Farm.
