APRIL CEMETERY EVENTS – HOSTED BY THE FRIENDS OF JACKSONVILLE’S HISTORIC CEMETERY
HISTORY SATURDAY – APRIL 14
Back by popular demand is our History Saturday program in Jacksonville’s Historic Cemetery. This was a well attended program in 2011 and based on feedback, we are pleased to be able to offer it again this year. The series, which will take place on the second Saturday of the month, April through December, will kick off on Saturday, April 14. There will be no program offered in October as it conflicts with our Meet the Pioneers tours on October 12 and 13.The program offers an up close and personal look at the history of Jacksonville’s Pioneer Cemetery and its various Sections made up of religious and fraternal organizations.
April’s program will cover Victorian Mourning Customs, Cemetery Symbolism, and the design and details of some of the cemetery’s grave markers and monuments. You can find a complete listing of the scheduled programs and other details by visiting our web site at www.friendsjvillecemetery.org and look under Guided Tours. The program will also be announced monthly in the Jacksonville Review, as well as on line at www.JacksonvilleReview.com by looking under Play and then the Event Calendar.
The monthly programs will start at 10:00 a.m. and take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete. Your Docents will meet you at the top of the Cemetery Road near the Sexton’s Tool House. Be sure to dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Parking is available within the cemetery grounds. The program is free, but donations are always appreciated and help to support programs such as this, as well as ongoing restoration work in the cemetery.
