Sunday, May 1st, the Southern Oregon Historical Society held a one-of-a-kind, once-only fashion show of Ginger Roger’s amazing gowns. The fundraiser event was the brainchild of Jacksonville’s own Sharon Becker, wife of Jacksonville Mayor, Paul Becker. Paul knew the famous Ginger Rogers and her assistant of 18 years, Roberta Olden. Roberta had a closet full of Ginger’s beautiful clothes, and Sharon had a preview of them 6 years ago….and hence the idea was born!
Roberta gave a wonderful talk about Ginger Rogers – how she came to be her assistant and some funny events during her tenure with the famous actress/dancer. Ginger Roger’s famous career spanned from 1930 to 1965. In 1969 she sold her Beverly Hills Home (where she had lived for 34 years) and moved to her Rogue River Ranch near Shady Cove. She lived there until 1990, when she sold the ranch and moved closer in to Medford on Pioneer Road. She passed away on April 25, 1995, at the age of 83.
Sharon MC’d the event at the Rogue Valley Country Club. Rosemary Harrington was the fashion show commentator and Garth Harrington was the auctioneer of 5 amazing dresses….which went from $500 to $1200.
