In 1946, the future of the Jacksonville Courthouse looked pretty grim. There was a proposal to tear it down, but the outcry was great and the historic 1883 building was saved! So began the Southern Oregon Historical Society. We’ve weathered many challenges, and operating as a volunteer-based society, we continue to make history come alive as we preserve our common heritage.

SOHS maintains the second largest collection of artifacts in Oregon, as well as one of the finest and largest research libraries and archives in the state. Volunteers organize exhibits, programs and events throughout the County; and teach children and adults about our local history.

In 1982, Mary Hanley entrusted the care and maintenance of Hanley Farm to SOHS. Mary dreamed the farm would become a living history museum, a goal we continually strive to achieve. The Family Nurturing Center grows their crops and houses their farm animals at Hanley; visitors spend summer Sundays picnicking, guests tour the farm, gardens and the Hanley house; and Hanley is an increasingly popular place for weddings and parties. SOHS volunteers help in the library, maintain Hanley grounds and buildings, conduct tours, and help with multiple events throughout the year, including the Children’s Heritage Fair, Heritage Plant Sale, Scarecrow Festival, Haunted Field walks, and more!

As you can imagine, it takes many man-hours and donations to keep history alive in the valley. You don’t need special skills to volunteer—a smile, willingness to help, and great attitude will suffice! To learn more, visit http://sohs.org.
