Friday, March 22nd, at 7 PM the film at Old City Hall will be one of the brightest comedies ever filmed. The movie is THE COURT JESTER starring none other than that master of clowns himself, Danny Kaye.
THE COURT JESTER is a brilliant spoof of the Errol Flynn movie, ROBIN HOOD. This is not hyperbole! It is incredibly funny… and made all the more so by using Basil Rathbone as the arch villain, for it was he who was the villain in ROBIN HOOD. Indeed, once you have watched Danny Kaye make comedy mince meat of the swashbuckler image inherent in films such as THE MASK OF ZORRO or ROBIN HOOD, you’ll have difficulty ever watching any of them seriously once again… new or old.
The presence of a young Angela Lansbury, playing the Princess, should satisfy her television fans used to seeing her in her hit series MURDER SHE WROTE. In addition there is the talented British actress, Glynis Johns, in the romantic lead. Finally, there is one other British performer, Cecil Parker, in a most unusual role… a departure from his usual portrayal of touchy senior officers or British upper class characters. In this he is a comic foil for Danny Kaye’s antics.
The other day I found myself remarking to a visitor in my office, that one of my goals was to introduce our family of movie buffs to as many different performers as possible. This is regarded by many as the best thing Danny Kaye ever did. Be sure to mark it down on your calendars… March 22nd at 7 PM!
