Focus on Hanley Farm – July 2019

Hanley Farm is pleased to welcome the Rogue Eagles RC model airplane club, “one of the largest and oldest clubs in the State of Oregon.” On Sunday, July 7, from noon to 3:00pm, club members will demonstrate radio controlled airplanes and drones. A perfect day for model airplane enthusiasts!

On July 14 you’ll clap your hands and tap your toes to traditional old-time music. Bring your instrument and join in the “Community Backyard Bluegrass Circle Jam.” From 1:00pm to 3:00pm, enjoy banjo and fiddle music; vocal harmonies with Alex and Alexi; and from 2:00pm to 3:00pm, an open acoustic jam. Plus, we’re firing up the BBQ! So be sure to bring food to grill, and don’t forget your instruments!

In addition, every Sunday in July, and throughout the summer, Hanley Farm is open to the public. We invite you spend a day at the farm. Pack a picnic lunch, visit the “Bard’s Garden,” take a self-guided tour of the farm, and a docent-led Hanley House tour. Farm hours are noon-4:00pm, and house tours are 1:00pm-3:00pm. Sunday events are always free! House tours are $5 for Adults and $3 for SOHS Members and children 12 and younger.

Windows in Time Series—During World War II, one of the 155 prisoner of war base camps in the United States was Southern Oregon’s Camp White. The camp housed Field Marshall Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps fighters, and several other German soldiers. At the July WIT presentation, Lina Cordia will fill in the gaps in knowledge and dispel some of the myths associated with these POWs. She’ll examine prisoners’ identities and experiences, and their interaction with local residents. Wednesday, July 3 at the Medford Library, and Wednesday, July 10 at the Ashland Library, noon-1:00pm.

First Tuesdays Pub Talk—Older national parks such as Crater Lake are usually adorned with what Americans call “rustic architecture.” This type of design is a window to the past, and an indication of how European culture has seen nature. Stephen Mark is guest speaker at the July 2 talk, “Framing Nature: How Culture Shaped Crater Lake and the National Parks.” Stephen puts “America’s Best Idea” into context, forcing people to reassess what they think they know about a place less than 100 miles from Medford. July 2, 7:00pm, Four Daughters Irish Pub, 126 W. Main, Medford.
