Since Helena and Marc Lopez’ move to Southern Oregon from Escondido last October, despite Covid setbacks, business plans for her new store, Trotting Fox Boutique, have clipped along nicely—as if they were meant to happen.

“I thought about getting back into real estate, because I did that in California, but I was not really feeling it,” Helena said. “We were going to a Celebration of Life and I needed an outfit. I searched all over but couldn’t find anything suitable for the event. Inventory was low and stores had closed because of Covid. It was frustrating because I didn’t want to have to order something online.”

Helena mentioned to her husband that she felt there was a niche for a women’s boutique. “I think I should open one.” Marc agreed. “He has been incredibly supportive. He’s been there every step of the way for me.”

I asked how she arrived at such a catchy name. She’d played with a few word phrases appropriate to her purpose. “I thought of foxy lady. Strutting lady. And I started Googling these words, and fox trot came up.” The name, Trotting Fox, checked all the boxes.

Her daughter, Sydney, helped-out during a summer break from college. Having an artistic bent, she created the charming logo of the fox riding a horse.

Helena shared her goal for the store. “We’ve had so much negative news, we just need some comfort. I stock clothing made of soft, natural fabrics. I carry some bamboo products and Merino wool sweaters from Ireland.”

Trotting Fox offers women of all sizes comfortable clothing that feels like a warm hug—soft, stretchy, yet stylish and trendy. Helena works hard at getting her name out there. Trotting Fox has a comprehensive website. You’ll find her on Facebook and Instagram, where she regularly posts new pieces and promotes neighboring businesses and charities. When she’s not occupied with the store, Helena enjoys horseback riding and hiking.

“I’m very happy with the way things are going,” she adds. “Word is definitely getting out and the community is supporting me. Businesses are very supportive of one another here. We don’t carry the same products, so customers have choices.”

The holidays are back to cheer our hearts in warm and welcoming Jacksonville, and Trotting Fox will be a part of the Christmas parade. Helena says, “I want to encourage everyone to shop, eat and drink local.” Trotting Fox fills a cozy space located in the lower level of the historic J. Orth building on Oregon Street. They’re open Wednesday through Saturday 11-5 and Sunday 12-5. Come, find the perfect gift for your loved ones and yourself.
