Create a Scarecrow for the Historic Core!
Create a Scarecrow Program Announced
Each fall, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce takes great pride in decorating town with scarecrows to celebrate our festive fall season. Unfortunately, most of the scarecrows used in past years are in rather poor shape and need to be replaced.
Instead of just putting up cheaply-made replacements, businesses, service clubs and residents can are invited to join the fun and create a scarecrow that reflect their personal style! The idea for the program was offered-up by Linda Graham at Scheffels Toys. She suggests construction using a frame made of inexpensive PVC pipe (1/2“ or ¾” will do) connected by a center 4-way connector.
Overall length should be no more than 6 feet and width no more than 3 feet. If you want to make your scarecrow even more lifelike and pose-able, attach heavy wire within their arms or legs – but please make sure to place a piece of cork on any sharp ends so the wire doesn’t poke through. All scarecrows should be made to survive all forms of weather – use materials that are quick-drying (plastic bags, fiber fill, etc.) Choices of clothing and décor should be appropriate and reflect you, your business and our town.
Feel free to tastefully sew your name(s) to show off your creativity. After all, we want locals to “own” this as a part of our city’s culture for years to come. Businesses may place their scarecrows at the front of their store but should be careful not to infringe on any public right-of-way or block views at intersections. Violating scarecrows will be hauled away into protective police custody! All residents are invited to create scarecrows that will be put up, taken down and stored for you each year. Linda says that if Grants Pass can have their bears, we can have our scarecrows! All scarecrows need to be ready to put up no later than October 1st. Please feel free to call Linda Graham at (541) 261-9446 with any questions.
NOTE: One of Hanley Farm’s events on September 11:
Scarecrow-making workshops, held at 11:00 am, 12:30 and 2:00 pm. The cost for the workshop is $10 and all supplies will be provided. Hanley Farm, owned and operated by the Southern Oregon Historical Society, is located at 1053 Hanley Road, between Jacksonville and Central Point.
The scarecrows appearing in front of businesses downtown, and the Vistors Center, are wonderful. Good job!
