My View – February 2020

It’s such a pleasure to live in a town that knows how to celebrate the little things in life and throw a party and a parade to commemorate its cultural heritage! This month, please join me in thanking our friends at the Southern Oregon Chinese Cultural Association (SOCCA) for sponsoring and organizing Jacksonville’s 2020 Chinese New Year celebration. The day-long event on Saturday, February 8 will be the result of a year of hard work…as soon as last year’s dragon and lion dance costumes were stored away, the committee got to work on this year’s event—a testament to the volunteer spirit and ethic that makes the Rogue Valley such a unique and interesting place to live. Please read more about the Year of the Rat celebration in our feature article by Peggy Dover on page 5. You’ll also find the full schedule of events there, to help you plan and navigate your day in and around Jacksonville.

And speaking of celebrations… we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the last decade through the lens of our always-popular Jacksonville Review covers. See our full-page poster on the previous page, highlighting all 110 issue covers from 2010-2019…where you’ll surely recognize friends, artists, musicians, community leaders, and others. During our pre-press work, I showed the page to a friend who’d popped by the office—she remarked how much the Review had changed and improved over the years—something I’m always pleased and proud to hear nearly every day from our loyal readers!

Of course, one thing that hasn’t changed over the decades is the Review’s emphasis on spotlighting the best of what Jacksonville offers to those lucky to live and visit here—from our wine, art, music, culinary, cultural and yes, even our political scenes, the Review’s mission has been, and will remain, to reflect what life here is all about.

Most importantly, the goal will always include a deep-seeded commitment to emphasizing and spotlighting the impact of an incredibly devoted pool of citizen-volunteers who are the heart of our Small Town with Big Atmosphere!
