Tree Code Updated—The monthly City Council work session on 10/17/23 dealt with changes in the code for the removal of trees in the city. After code changes suggested by a Citizens Advisory Committee and refining by the Planning Commission, Council is set to codify the code on November 7. As such, it will become easier to remove hazard trees – those deemed a safety hazard and a fire hazard. Furthermore, the Planning Department will have more latitude in granting permits and how much the permit fee will cost. The Fire Chief will also be able to order the removal of a tree under an emergency tree removal standard. Upon tree removal, the old standard that called for a 1:1 or 2:1 tree replacement requirement will include more discretion and relief standards.
Burning in the Woodlands Planned—With weather conditions ideal, Grayback Forestry is scheduled to conduct a prescribed burn on 40 acres of woodlands above the Britt grounds. Residents should be aware of the burning program that is expected to take several days.
Sheriff’s/Police Contract Update—Police Chief David Towe reported that the proposed contract with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department to provide weekend and evening protection has hit a snag – certain Jackson County Commissioners and the County Administrator have questioned portions of the contract regarding PERS and contract length. Currently, the city staff is working diligently with the county to resolve contractual hiccups.
