At its April 7, 2015 City Council meeting, Jacksonville Mayor Paul Becker will honor Clara Wendt and Larry Smith for their many years of public service. The meeting starts at 6 pm at Old City Hall and the public is invited (as always) to attend and show their support. The brief presentation will be the first action item on the council agenda.
Clara Wendt will be recognized for her long years of service and devotion to the city, both as Mayor and as a member of multiple committees. For decades, she’s attended nearly every city meeting, often participating and/or commenting on a swath of issues and topics. In recent years, Mrs. Wendt has become best-known for her stern warning during public comment that “Urban Renewal is not a cash cow!”
Council will also honor Larry Smith, generally regarded as the founder and father of the Jacksonville Woodlands Trail System. Smith, who has also served on numerous committees and commissions including Parks and Budget is the acting Executive Director of the JWA and director of the annual Hike a Thon, held each April. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the JWA. Mr. Smith will be honored for his energy and vision as well as his dedication to the preservation of Jacksonville’s natural and cultural heritage.
