Focus on the Farm – July 2021

Hanley Farm welcomes Nick Garrett-Powell’s return at the summer’s first “Cars Under the Stars Drive-In Concert,”on July 1, 6:30-8:30pm (gates open at 5:45pm). A celebrated local acoustic guitarist and soloist, Nick’s music ranges from classics to contemporary. Tickets are $55/per car and includes two glasses of wine and unlimited popcorn—purchase tickets at sohs.org/drive-in-concert. Food and dessert trucks will be on-site for you to purchase additional goodies! Proceeds from this event support the Farm’s ability to present events and enables SOHS to continue the maintenance, preservation, and care of Hanley Farm and its rich heritage. Thank you!

Summer Thursdays at the Farm are held weekly, 4-8pm. Bring a picnic, take a self-guided garden tour, enjoy Family Nurturing Center Demonstrations, take a Covid-free Hanley House tour, and enjoy special events listed below. There’s a modest $5 fee for the house tour, but everything else is free!

  • July 8, Siskiyou Violins—A group of talented Southern Oregon and Northern California young violinists perform delightful ensemble pieces.
  • July 15, Family Heritage Fair, Part II—Step back in time at Hanley Farm
  • July 22, Crafts Fair—Tom Lune Banjo, and Crawling Critters Photo Booth—fun for everyone!
  • July 29, Gold Digger’s Guild Ice Cream Social—an ice cream social you won’t want to miss!

The Southern Oregon Historical Society Research Library has re-openedhours are Tuesday through Friday, 1-4pm. Knowledgeable SOHS Volunteers and a professional archivist will be on hand to lend assistance and share their knowledge of local history and the Society’s unique collections. Thanks to Jackson County Library Services, SOHS research user fees are now free when presenting a JCLS Library card.

July 7, noon-1pm, Windows in Time: Kevin Keating, SOHS Volunteer and Board of Trustees Member, presents “Over Here: Jackson County & World War I.” Kevin explores what it was like in Southern Oregon during World War I. Using information from news sources and the National Archives, he’ll talk about war supporters and anti-war supporters, as well as problems that occurred in the Rogue Valley, like prostitution and intimidation, while the war was “over there.” This is a Zoom presentation; register at https://jcls.libcal.com/event/7644220.
