1937 – 2023
Surrounded by her loving family, Carmen Leta Cabler passed away peacefully February 6, 2023. Born in 1937, Carmen was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville – graduating from Jacksonville High in 1955 where she met first husband Jim and became a cheerleader. Daughter to Arthur Davies, a charter member of the Timber Barons, and Geneva Davies – a Royal Neighbors of America member for 60 years; Granddaughter to Charlie Dorothy, the town barber, and Dora Dorothy, who operated The Nugget confectionery. Jacksonville and her father’s homesteaded land were dear to her heart.
The proud mother of Carmen “Dori” Cabler Helman (Theodore) and Tony Cabler (Marie), Carmen made an impact on every life she touched. Family being most important in her life, she found great joy in her 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, cherished nieces Kathy and Rebecca, numerous great- nieces and nephews; and loved ones gone before her, son Timothy, nephew Joe and husband Bob.
Carmen’s love of music and dance began in childhood with the dream of dancing on Broadway, leading her to perform with the Misty Mountain Cloggers, and Dancin’ Shoes.
Carmen was an adventurous worldwide traveler. She enjoyed camping, beginning annual huckleberry picking trips as a child that continued throughout her life and a tradition her family will keep going. An avid gardener with a deep love of animals, Carmen supported conservation efforts and the preservation of wildlife and natural habitats.
Famous for her Christmas candy baskets and potato salad, Grammie’s love of cooking and baking will be treasured for generations through her unique recipes!
Celebrating Carmen’s life, family and friends will gather Sunday, May 7, 2023 from 2-4pm at the Odd Fellows Hall in Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Carmen’s name to the World Wildlife Foundation and the Heifer Foundation are appreciated.
