Free training course starts in February
GRANTS PASS, Ore.—Jan. 17, 2014—The Asante Hospice team needs new hospice volunteers to give companionship to patients and respite for their families. Because it is such a profound experience, volunteers receive meaningful training to prepare them. Asante Hospice will sponsor a free, five-session course for volunteers beginning in late Feb.
Sessions will be on Fridays from 9 to 3 p.m. beginning Fri., Feb. 21 through Fri., Mar. 21 at Asante Hospice located in Grants Pass at 1550 NW 6th Street.
Sally Melton, director of hospice volunteers, says volunteers serve in many ways. They can provide companionship for the patient while their family or friends take a few hours away, run errands, do light housekeeping, or perform clerical work at the hospice office.
“But primarily volunteers are listeners,” Melton says. “A hospice volunteer is friendly, supportive, engaging, flexible, and loves people.” They are often people who have lost a loved one and now feel a calling to help patients and their families, Melton added.
