Discovering Southern Oregon – June 2025

THE WILD AND SCENIC ROGUE RIVER is one of the most iconic waterways in the U.S. Designated in 1968 as one of the original eight under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, it remains protected and free-flowing, known for its stunning scenery, rich history, and abundant recreation.

The river runs 84 miles from Grave Creek to Watson Creek, with the most famous 34-mile stretch lying between Grave Creek and Foster Bar. This section features thrilling whitewater, lush forests, waterfalls, and deep canyons. Rapids from Class II to Class IV—like Rainie Falls, Mule Creek Canyon, and Blossom Bar—are legendary. Wildlife sightings often include bears, otter, bald eagles, osprey, and migrating salmon.

Adventuring along the Rogue offers a true escape into Oregon’s wilderness. With no cell service, you’ll find time slowing, replaced by the rush of rapids, peaceful canyon views, and the thrill of wildlife encounters.

Here are four unforgettable ways to explore the Wild & Scenic Rogue:

Hiking & Backpacking—The 40-mile Rogue River Trail follows the river’s twists and turns over a variety of terrains. Hike a short segment or take on the whole trail. It clings to canyon walls, crosses streams, and though rocky in spots, remains mostly level.

Undeveloped campsites are available first-come, first-served. A popular first stop is Whiskey Creek, three miles in. Backpackers should bring gear to hang food away from bears or choose camps with electric bear fences. Prefer more comfort? Several lodges dot the trail. Marial Lodge is the first accessible by hikers, 20 miles in. From there, Paradise Lodge is another 3.7 miles downriver, and the upscale Half Moon Bar Lodge lies across the river in a serene meadow. Alternatively, drive to the Marial trailhead via BLM roads and start your trek there.

To simplify logistics, arrange a shuttle with Whitewater Cowboys, Galice Lodge, or Morrisons, so you can hike point-to-point without retracing steps.

Before you go, stop by the Smullin Visitor Center at Rand (14335 Galice Rd, Merlin, OR) for maps and updates.

Rafting & Kayaking—This section of the Rogue is ideal for multi-day whitewater rafting. Whether self-guided or led by professionals, it offers scenic floats and thrilling rapids. Top outfitters include Whitewater Cowboys, Noah’s, ROW Adventures, Momentum, and Morrisons Rogue Wilderness Adventures.

Many trips begin with a night at Morrisons Lodge, where guests enjoy riverfront cabins and gourmet meals before setting out. Choose from lodge-to-lodge rafting, riverside camping, or hiking while a raft carries your gear. With expert guides and full support, all you have to do is enjoy the ride.

Jet Boat Tours—For a relaxed adventure, take a jet boat tour with Jerry’s Rogue Jets from the Port of Gold Beach up to Agness and into the Wild and Scenic section. These tours are an easy and exciting way to experience the river’s remote beauty.

Return to Gold Beach or disembark at Paradise Lodge or Half Moon Bar Lodge for an off-grid overnight escape.

Drift Boat Fishing—In fall, the Rogue becomes a haven for anglers. Join a four-day, 64-mile fishing trip in a drift boat, targeting Chinook, steelhead, and coho. These guided trips include riverside meals—often freshly grilled steelhead—and overnights in cozy lodges with private cabins and hearty food. Outfitters like Morrisons and Briggs Rogue River Trips run these unforgettable journeys.

Whether hiking through canyon forests, rafting whitewater, jet boating into the backcountry, or fishing in solitude, the Wild and Scenic Rogue River offers a uniquely Oregon adventure.
