Focus on Hanley Farm – February 2019
2018 was a busy year for us with free guided tours of the SOHS Library Research Library archives which will continue in 2019. Every Saturday, enrich your Library visit with a tour of the archive, one of the largest archival repositories in the State of Oregon. Library hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon-4:00pm. Saturday tours begin at 2:00pm.
Also new in 2018 on the first Tuesday of every month was the SOHS series of historic talks, held upstairs at the Four Daughters Irish Pub in downtown Medford—this too continues in 2019. Talks are free, begin at 7:00pm, and last about an hour, with ample time for questions and discussion afterwards. Presented by archaeologists, historians, and knowledgeable history buffs, every talk is fun and unique!
And in 2018, during the summer months, Hanley Farm opened to the public on Sundays. Families and friends brought a picnic and spent a leisurely afternoon at the farm, toured the historic Hanley Farmhouse and the Bard’s (Shakespeare) Garden, and took self-guided tours of the farm and gardens. In addition, every Sunday a different special group attended, demonstrating their crafts and displaying their wares. Sundays at the Farm will also continue in 2019, beginning May 26 and ending September 1. Admission is free! Hanley House tours are $5 for adults and $3 for children and SOHS members. Farm Hours: noon–4:00pm. House Tours: 1:00–3:00pm.
From April to December, 2019, Hanley Farm will be busy! April 27 & 28 is the annual Heritage Plant Sale. June 24 through June 28, Pioneer Summer Camp returns to the farm, run by the City of Central Point. Additional events include the June 29 & 30 Living History Days; the Third Annual Roots Music Festival on September 7; the Scarecrow Festival (co-produced by the City of Central Point) October 5 & 6; and the Haunted Field Walk, “Boogey Man’s Bride.” Every month—a new adventure!
Windows in Time Series: Wilderness Survival, 100 Years Ago—Paul Fattig speaks about his uncles, Alfred and Charlie Fattig, conscientious objectors who retreated to the remote Oregon wilderness during World War 1. On Wednesday, February 6, noon-1:00pm, Medford Library, 205 S. Central Avenue; and again on Wednesday, February 13, noon-1:00pm, Ashland Library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd.
