The Southern Oregon Historical Society is pleased to announce the July event for its monthly Tales from the Collections program. The program will take place at SOHS’s History Center in downtown Medford (106 N. Central Ave.) on Saturday, July 23rd, 2016 from 10am to 12pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Join SOHS’s Curator of Collections, Mackensie Hotz, as she explores how changing social norms have influenced women’s fashion. Throughout history, many aspects of life including economic class, occupation, gender, and even politics are woven into how women have dressed. Beginning with the early settlement of Oregon in the 1850s through the most recent decades of contemporary history and everything in between, this investigation will be set against the backdrop of the evolution of this region. Many of the garments in the SOHS collection were worn by people who lived, worked, and died in the Rogue Valley, and serve as a reflection of both the regional history as well as shifting societal conventions in America. A selection of garments and accessories from the SOHS textile collection will be on hand to provide a unique, multi-dimensional look at this fascinating topic.

Following the event, the Research Library at the History Center will be open from noon to 2pm for anyone wishing to use the SOHS archives for research. The usual research fee is always waived on the fourth Saturdays!
