All classes begin at 10am and are located at the nursery unless indicated otherwise, space is limited so please be sure to register.

Jan. 14th, , 6-8pm- ‘Deer Resistant and Drought Tolerant Plants’- at Central Point Library– Two of the most common problems in our lovely valley are deer and long, dry summers, but you can still have a beautiful and sustainable garden by making the right plant choices.   Shooting Star Nursery specializes in drought tolerant and deer resistant trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses and will discuss some of the diverse options you have. Christie Mackison, co-owner and landscape designer, will show you a unique selection and explain how to care for them and prep the soil for a successful waterwise garden.   Plan that beautiful summer garden by doing your homework this winter!

*Feb 13th noon- 2pm–Valentines Floral Arrangement Workshop – Make a straight from the heart homemade gift for your valentine. *Feb 20th Beginners Guide to Pruning, Planting, & Training Fruit Trees – Just bought that bare root fruit tree and don’t know what to do next? Our experts will teach you how to prune that young tree and get it started correctly. Learn the best methods for planting your fruit trees as well as options for maximizing yields in smaller spaces, including espaliering or growing more than one tree in a hole.   This class is best for gardeners starting out with new fruit trees. *Feb. 27th Pruning Older Fruit Trees – We had such a good response to last year’s fruit tree class that we thought we’d divide into two groups; this class will cover how to prune and restore more established, older fruit trees. Fruit trees require annual pruning for optimal health and productivity, you can even prune up to three times a year to control size and fruit set. Come see pruning demonstrations on existing fruit trees and learn how to tackle those daunting larger specimens, ensuring continued vigor and proper training. Fresh coffee will be on hand to keep you warm for this outside demo.

March 5th, New to Gardening Series- Soil Prep and Mulch-  This series of classes will cover some gardening basics to get you started on the right path to a successful garden. Happy soil = happy plants. Learn the best ways to amend your soil, from clay to gritty decomposed granite. Interested in a drought tolerant garden? Proper soil prep will make those plants thrive and in turn be less work for you. We will also be using our display gardens to cover what kinds of mulch work best in the Rogue Valley climate.

March 12th – New to Gardening Series- Spring Cleanup and Pruning – Next in our beginner series is what to do in the gardening come mid spring. This is our favorite time to get in there and clean up perennials, cut back lavenders and ornamental grasses, and some selective pruning.   Get ready for spring blooms with this hands on demonstration class!

*March 19th- Saturday Morning Nursery Tour, 10 AM- Get a hands on tour of some of the new plants and trees, including fruit trees and berries, of the season. *April 2nd – Mason Bee Houses – Bring the kids and make a mason bee house! Mason bees do a lot for our pollination needs because they are out earlier in the season than honey bees and they need homes with just the right size of opening. April 5thth – Deer Resistant Plants, 6-8 pm-  Learn about some great plant options for deer country.   We will take a tour of the OSU Extension Garden to see examples as well as other plant options featured at Shooting Star Nursery.

*April 9th– Perennial and Medicinal Herb Garden– Create a useful and beautiful garden bed that is all perennial (comes back every year). There are so many great options for cooking, tinctures, brewing, and more.

April 23rd – New to Gardening Series- Watering Methods for Drought Tolerant Plants –In the last of our beginner series we will show you the best way to water and care for our drought tolerant plants.   This will make the plants happier and save you time and money and our precious water! This class is good for all gardeners- from beginning to more experienced, our most common problem is overwatering plants.

April 30th/May 1st – Master Gardener Spring Fair at the Expo Center – come see us at the fair! We will have many unusual plants, edibles, and potted arrangements that you may not have seen at the nursery.

 

*May 5th,, Thursday 6-7:30pm- Mother’s Day Floral Workshop – Celebrate mom by creating a truly special floral arrangement or wreath of local flowers and foliage. Join Juleianna of Petali Floral for a creative evening of homemade bouquets with friends and family. Bring your favorite vase or jar and all other supplies and tools are included as well as wine, chocolates, and treats.

*May 7th – Mothers Day Kids Class – Bring the kids and have them decorate a pot for Mom! Then they can pick out a plant to make it even more special. Lemonade, treats, and our entertaining sandbox will add to the festivities.

*May 14th – New This Season! – Shooting Star Nursery specializes in drought tolerant and deer resistant plants that thrive in the myriad of microclimates that is the Rogue Valley. Come discover exciting new varieties of perennials, grasses and shrubs with a personal tour led by our head grower, Erik Peterson.   We have more plants than ever, many of which are grown on site, acclimated to our specific climate and far from ordinary!

*June 4th The Birds and the Bees: Attracting Pollinators to Your Garden – Flowers rich in pollen and nectar and their resulting seed-heads are important sources of food that must be present year round to sustain a healthy population of pollinators. Come learn about what specific perennials, grasses, shrubs, and even trees our flying friends adore to keep your garden buzzing with activity throughout the seasons.   Plus we will have several forms of Milkweed available to insure those Monarch butterflies will be visiting your yard.

*June 25th– Tips for Propagating Perennials-  Get a hands on lesson from our resident horticulturist, Erik, on how to create more of your favorite perennials. June and July are good months to use techniques such as cuttings, layering, and divisions. This will be a hands on class where you will come away with many new skills and some new plants to bring home!
